Colorado Governor Bill Owens (R): "May peace, love, joy and prosperity bless your home and family this holiday season" 2. The Christmas Cards' History

Image
Christmas Cards The Christmas card is without a doubt the most sent greeting of the year. But the Valentine's Day greeting came long before the Christmas card. It can be traced all the way back to the 1400s. The first official Christmas card was first sent in 1843 in England and it depicted a family in a cosy setting drinking wine. The first Christmas cards rarely had Xmas as a theme on the card. Instead they focused on the coming of Spring and showed pictures of flowers, animals and children. The British Royal family also began sending out Christmas cards in the 1840s. Here Queen Victoria focused on the things that had happened in the family the previous year. The Christmas card quickly became very popular in various circles in Europe and in 1875 the German immigrant Louis Prang started the first series of American Christmas cards. A few years later Prang was producing over 5 million Christmas cards for the USA. The Christmas card has been a colossal success since then but today t...

History of the Christmas Tree

Image
A Christmas tree, Yule tree, holiday tree or Tannenbaum (German: fir tree) is one of the most popular traditions associated with the celebration of Christmas. It is normally an evergreen coniferous tree that is brought into a home or used in the open, and is decorated with Christmas lights and colorful ornaments during the days around Christmas. An angel or star is often placed at the top of the tree, representing the host of angels or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity story. Almost every American child in the past 50 years has sung this favorite tribute to the Christmas tree, the symbol of the glories of the much anticipated celebration of Christmas. How fitting it is that the German word for Christmas tree (Tannenbaum - literally translated as fir tree) is known by all since the Christmas tree finds its earliest origins in Germany. By legend, Saint Boniface, a 7th century monk from England, used the triangular shape of a fir tree as a symbol to teach Germans about the Holy Trin...

Christmas Flower

Image
Christmas Flower Poinsettia is considered by most people in this world as the Christmas flower. This Christmas flower is often grown in Mexico and other South American countries, and it is usually exported in the form of potted plants to the United States of America during the holiday season. You may have noticed that this Christmas flower becomes more expensive as Christmas Day nears, so you should consider purchasing this Christmas flower from the shops that sell it even during the first few weeks of the holiday season. However, you should also consult with your florist regarding the proper care that this Christmas flower needs to survive through weeks and weeks of care until you hand it out to your loved ones on Christmas Day. But if you find this a time-consuming venture for someone that has to face the hustle and bustle of modern city living, you should opt for a good alternative to this Christmas flower. An alternative to this Xmas flower is a bouquet of roses. This is because ro...

Artificial Christmas Trees

Image
Fake Christmas trees have a negative impact on the environment and pose significant health risks and hazards for both consumers and workers. Artificial Christmas trees are made with polyvinyl chloride (or PVC) which is a petroleum-derived plastic. The raw material for fake Christmas trees is both non-renewable and polluting. Furthermore, PVC production results in the unhealthy emission of a number of carcinogens, such as dioxin, ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride. Production of artificial Christmas trees in China and elsewhere is done in sweatshop conditions without the health concern for workers. Many workers involved in the production are exposed to dangerous chemicals without adequate safety controls. In order to make the PVC needles on artificial trees more malleable, the manufacturers use lead and other additives which have been linked to liver, kidney, neurological and reproductive system damage in lab studies on animals. The Children's Health Environmental Coalition w...

Christmas Games

Image
When planning Christmas games for young children, the options are endless. Make sure you provide room to run, do a little planning and the kids are sure to have a good time. Let's start with a few relay race ideas. Begin with a candy cane relay. Give each team 4 candy canes (and be sure to have a few more in case some break) and have the child who's running hold the candy canes between their fingers, with the crooked part of the cane hanging over their fingers. But tell them not to use their thumbs. The canes should be just carefully perched between their fingers. The children run to their teammate, exchange the candy canes (again, only using fingers), and that teammate runs to the other end and does the same. The game is over when only one team still has candy canes that haven't dropped on the floor. Another fun Christmas game relay race that kids love is pass the ornament. In this game, each team gets one ornament (a lightweight, basic thin glass one is fine) and a straw....

Christmas Traditions

Image
Christmas Traditions – Gift Giving Gift giving is probably the most well known of all Christmas traditions in both Eastern and Western cultures. Moms and Dads have the opportunity to share with their children important truths about giving during their family’s Christmas celebration. While a good deal of focus will be placed upon purchasing safe, fun, and educational children’s toys, parents may also take this time to let children experience the joy of giving to others. Several months after Jesus Christ was born, wise men came and presented gifts to Him. “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.’ On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh...
